The standards which have been used in breeding and training Service Dogs are no longer enough to meet the
needs of a changing world where safety and freedom can no longer be guaranteed. The Legend of the DDR & Czech Border Patrol Dogs
is very much a part of our family history dating back to the 1940’s when the eastern European countries had fallen under communist
control. During these dark times, kennels throughout Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia frantically attempted to smuggle
their dogs to freedom in order to prevent them from being slaughtered. The United States welcomed thousands, but our laws limited
the number which was admitted.
The ASPCA was assigned the regulatory responsibility, and John Malone, our Father, was the ASPCA’s supervisor
in charge of port entry. Because Dad was determined to save as many dogs as possible, he waived the 4 dogs for each man rule, and
allowed 8 dogs per man to enter the New York City port. As a very young child, I remember watching the dogs in their wood crates being
unloaded from the freighters and transported to the quarantine facility at La Guardia Airport where Dad would ‘fix’ their paperwork
to hide the dogs which he had smuggled in. Many of which, found their way into our home where they remained until arrangements were
made for shipment to their destinations around the world. What Dad did was against the law, but his moral obligation was his driving
force. Today, we continue his good work and we take great pride in doing our part to maintain the integrity of this magnificent type
of German Shepherd Dog. Patricia Malone-Tata, Breeder Von Klaus-Fedor Shepherds Specializing in Police, Law Enforcement, Military,
